SYNOPSIS
Stewart sees a ghostly figure out of the corner of his eye. He and his friend, Andy, begin a ghost investigation that leads to an adventure of a lifetime. Coming face-to-face with a ghost, the boys make a decision to join forces with a group of girls, who have encountered a ghost of their own. The kids soon find that the ghosts that they've encountered are in imminent danger and need their help. Can the kids devise a plan to help the ghost in time? Will they be able to reunite a ghost with his lost family? Complete with a ghost village and a feud, this story takes on a life of its own.
The Ghost of Whispering Willow is a story focused on middle-grade students discovering the secrets of the nearby woods. It follows a group of friends - both boy and girl groups - who learn that ghosts really do exist. While the premise is very simple, the book itself is highly engaging and entertaining.
This book has the theme of friendship paired with suspense and drama, culminating in a fun adventure - especially for young readers! The writing is age-appropriate in terms of reading level and is very easy to follow. The characters are interesting and relatable when it comes to having a sense of adventure and a feeling of responsibility when it comes to caring for their friends. I liked the way the groups were able to have different encounters with the main ghost and the problems posed by the circumstances of the ghost's death.
Another element this story does well is presenting a fantasy world that has bittersweet elements as an engaging and different location. I liked the ghost village and would love to see more done with it in general. It was a really fun and imaginative space. I also really like the way the setting is presented and how real the wood feels. I greatly enjoyed how big the cast of characters is and the way they collectively take up the space in each important location.
I give The Ghost of Whispering Willow a Lone Star rating of ✯✯✯✯. It's fun and entertaining, though there are slight technical writing aspects in the beginning that took me a moment to get used to. However, they aren't dealbreakers for the overall story and it's absolutely worth reading if you like suspense with horror elements that aren't as scary as they have the potential to be at a quick glance.
