Chris wants to be a star scorer like
his brother—so why does his coach keep him waiting on the bench?
Chris comes from a sports-loving family. His brother is the star scorer on the
high school team, and is being recruited by Division 3 colleges. Chris longs to
earn the same adulation, and he’s a good scorer for his junior high team. But
why won’t his coach start him? He’s better on defense than his rival, Carlos,
and nearly as good a shooter.
Soon Chris becomes obsessed with earning a place in his team’s starting lineup.
He does everything he can think of—including being an invaluable player every
time he comes in. But nothing seems to get Coach’s attention. Even after he
learns the history of the valuable “6th man,” Chris can’t seem to let it go.
How will he ever be a big scoring star?
For every kid who hates to read but loves basketball, comes a suspenseful novel
with plenty of play-by-play sports action.
MY REVIEW:
Off the Bench is the story of Chris, a middle school basketball player who wants to be a starter for his team. His family loves basketball and is very knowledgable about the sport, helping to fuel his love of the game. As he plays more, he starts to realize what it means to be part of a team and he learns about some finer points of the game he wasn't aware of before.
I really liked this book. It's a great sports fiction read for young sports fans - especially those who like basketball. I think kids who like sports in general will like this one. It's easy to read, it's fast-paced, and it has a lot of basketball action. One of the things I love most about this book is that it really focuses just on Chris and his desire to be a starter. It doesn't add too many extra details or drama in his family life, which is refreshing. Sometimes it's nice to just have a book that focuses purely on sports without additional struggles and distractions for the main character.
This book also does a really good job at discussing the "sixth man", which some readers may not know about. I think this is a great way to deepen kids' understanding of the game and its finer points. It also shows that there are roles to be filled that may not be as well-known or popular, despite being very important. Off the Bench is a really fun book that is perfect for young basketball & sports fans. I think this could be a great book for reluctant readers or kids who are looking for the right book to light their reading spark. I definitely recommend it and give it a Lone Star rating of ✯✯✯✯ stars.
