My Review:
Murder's Legacy is the second Tori Winters Mystery book. It follows the series' titular heroine, Tori Winters, as she strives to open up her own bed & breakfast in her inherited historical home. Unfortunately, someone in town doesn't want her to reach her goals - coincidentally occurring right when a rather old skeleton has been uncovered on her property. Tori needs to save her business and figure out what other skeletons are buried in Granbury, Texas.
While this is a mystery, it isn't a typical one. In many ways, it actually reminds me of a play in terms of its setup and main action. A lot of the story takes place within Tori's home/future business. Much of the progression occurs through the meetings she has with her companions about construction progress, hold-ups and reactions from the locals via newspaper or visits to her property. The story IS a novel, in standard prose format, but the setting itself is almost its own character since so much happens in this one multi-room location. At first I found this a little strange, but over time I started to really enjoy it. There are moments when Tori goes out and events take place elsewhere, but for the majority of the book, readers get an intimate look at Tori's historic home and family legacy.
Another way this mystery is a little less typical from the ones that I read is that it isn't one that you up and solve ahead of time. The clues are dropped in spaced out enough to keep the mystery going until almost the end. That was really refreshing for me, personally. I picked up on the suspicious beats easily enough, but I really had to hold on for the payoff to come. I liked not being able to crack this one too early or a few beats off from the reveal. It's fun to change things up. Have some decodable mysteries, have some suspenseful reads that keep you guessing and wondering what the next turn will be. I love that delay. At times I did start to feel a little bit of drag, but not enough to severely hinder my reading experience or annoy me in any way.
I like Tori. She's hesitant, but when it comes to the things she loves she becomes very fierce and protective. I love the way she develops as a heroine. I also really liked the supporting cast she keeps around her. I didn't read the first book, so it took a moment to get oriented with who everyone is. It also took a minute to catch up on the bits of info alluding to the previous book. However, once I got through the first couple of chapters, I was off and running. You don't HAVE to read the first book to read the second, though I'm sure the first one is very interesting and I'd love to read it since it would fill in a couple of little gaps in my knowledge. All in all, I really like Murder's Legacy and I recommend it to readers who want a change of pace in their mystery offerings. Visit Tori's Red Door Inn. Come for the camaraderie, stay for the suspense. I give Murder's Legacy a Lone Star rating of ✯✯✯✯ stars. If you're looking for more books published by Texans (supporting local in my case), this is a good one to try! Bonus points for the sweet tea and kolaches...
