Tess Corona left home thanks to a traumatic experience with the paranormal and has only recently returned home from a secretive military career. Her only desire is to reconnect with her family and find meaningful work. That plan changes when a Texas Ranger lands on her doorstep looking for her twin brother.
Thanks to the suspicious actions of a murder victim’s family, Texas Ranger Crock Ward is asked to investigate the twenty-five-year-old case. With the evidence missing and victim’s husband now deceased, Crock seeks alternatives to solve the murder in the form of Dr. Lazaro Corona and his ghost hunting team.
Laz has dreamed of combining cold cases with paranormal investigation, but he curses the timing. He can’t stop Tess from resuming her role in his investigation any more than he can stop a tornado or a century-old feud that has already destroyed one family and now threatens his.

Review:
And They Danced is what I'd call a paranormal mystery. It has a Texas Ranger solving a cold case with an ex-Army gal while including some supernatural ghosty stuff that I could not get enough of. I really like when a book surprises me - and this one did. I loved Tess and Crock's characters and their broader dynamic. I also really enjoyed the way this wasn't a traditional mystery.
Some of my favorite indie reads have been paranormal mysteries; this one is no exception. The book starts off simply enough but quickly turns into an unconventional cold case mystery that can't be solved using traditional means. It has all the great elements of a fun mystery read, adding more fun by playing with the genre using unconventional aspects.
I really think this book basically had it all. It had themes of family, a love that went beyond life, a budding romance that hasn't fully bloomed, and quite a few laughs despite the danger. The mix didn't hit the sweet spot at times, but it was very close. There were just a couple of things I wanted more of. I'm excited that this is a series since I want to spend more time with these characters and see where their lives go. It has some classic Texas conflicts and themes but feels fresh and fun. I give And They Danced a Lone Star rating of ✯✯✯✯ stars.
