Eva dodges the fans, media, and gossip that follow her supermodel mom and rock star family members by wearing disguises. After an aimless gap year, she struggles to figure out what she wants from life. She moves in with her famous guitar god brother in Austin while he recovers from a drunken stage stunt accident and tries to stay sober. When a hot Texas cowboy named Alex takes Eva by surprise, she risks her safety and security of anonymity by letting him into her unconventional life.

Alex is captivated by Eva and promises to protect her privacy. Yet he has a secret of his own—the fling he had with an older woman is fraught with scandalous potential for him and now Eva. He broke free of that mistake months ago, or so he thought. As things heat up with Eva, his old flame returns and won’t leave him alone.

Just when Alex thinks he has the reins on the situation, his ex teams up with a gossip reporter hell-bent on invading Eva’s privacy. The resulting exposé, with a sly spin on a recent encounter with his ex, is Alex’s worst nightmare, and Eva’s unsure what to believe. Can she face the world with Alex at her side or will she return into hiding?

Whiskey on Our Shoes is a romance story set in Texas, centered on two young people with far more secrets than anyone could be expected to have. Alex had a taboo relationship that went bad, while Eva is the daughter of a supermodel trying to stay out of the limelight. The two fall for each other after her rockstar brother stirs up some wild attempts to break his rehab and the drama ramps up from there.

The romance element is fun. It's all very light and entertaining. I like that Eva really takes her time with things because of the high speed life the people around her have been living. I like how contrasted she is with her family and how down to earth it makes her. Alex is an interesting character. I wouldn't say he's my favorite love interest, but it's pretty clear he's doing his best after having made a mistake early in his life.

The drama in this book gets big. The rockstar life is juxtaposed with the idea of what a normal life could be like - while it feels unattainable. There are so many larger-than-life wild moments, which aren't overly described or bombastic. They're just big enough to make you go "whoa", but not enough to provide a feeling of being too uncomfortable while reading.

The pacing was interesting. I do feel like some of the conflict came a bit late, but it was also understandable. A few things had to be established before the trouble could be turned up higher. I enjoyed the silly circus that some of the characters provided and for the most part the story flowed well. I enjoyed the progression.

Overall, Whiskey on Our Shoes is a fun romance that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's light, it's entertaining, and it's full of secrets and mistakes as two young people try to find themselves - while their hearts find each other. I give it a Lone Star rating of  ✯✯✯✯ stars.
