Black Magic woman meets Black Ops Bond in this supernatural spy saga from New York Times bestselling author, Cavan Scott!

From NewYork Times bestseller Cavan Scott (Star Wars: The High Republic) and artist Corin Howell (Wonder Woman) comes the start of a thrilling new chapter of the supernatural spy saga!

All over the world, secret agents are being murdered by monstrous folk horrors, and not even MI666 is safe. Gina Meyer faces tragedy as a teammate turns enemy. But what of the quest to find out the truth about her past and powers?

Shadow Service stands tall next to the likes of Criminal Macabre and Hellblazer in the world of supernatural detectives while still putting its own spin on it to stand apart.   – Horror DNA

For fans of Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan (The Hollows), The Department of Truth, Umbrella Academy, Doctor Who, Star Wars High Republic, Hellblazer, and James Bond.

My Review:

Shadow Service is a paranormal occult horror fantasy series involving a secret organization and lots and lots of crazy threats they face. This is essentially a very occult comic version of The X-Files. That being said this comic is also very graphic, has adult language, themes, and a decent dash of nudity, so readers be aware of your comfort levels and this series' content.

The first two volumes deal with the main character, Gina, learning about the organization trying to catch her. While the third volume begins a brand new adventure - still starring Gina as the lead. This is not a finished series, so there should definitely still be more to come and you need to be aware of that. Because WHAT IS THAT CLIFFHANGER?! I was curious about a few things and then the story just ENDED and....now I'm left wondering what's going to happen to Gina next. I like her as a heroine. Her mysterious dark past is a fun extra element and I like the levels of mystery that keep going deeper and deeper.

The supporting cast are all very interesting with their own stories that are briefly spotlighted, with more layers being gradually peeled back. I was particularly fond of Edwin while I was reading. Quill is also a very curious and interesting character. I've really enjoyed seeing how each character fits into the broader narrative and given some of the twists, I'm rather concerned at this point. I have no idea what is going to come next and what worries me is that I don't know when the next section of the series is going to start. When do we get the sixteenth issue? It's greatly needed.

The art is also very, very enjoyable. Graphic at times? Yes, so not ALWAYS my cup of tea. However, I love a lot of the different color tones being used. I love the purples and blues and greens. There's a lot of red, which I'm not always partial to, but the color balances in this series are so pleasant and they add a really nice layer to the story. I also love the art style of the characters. The new addition in Vol. 3? Awesome. Her design is fabulous and I couldn't be more intrigued.

Shadow Service will be a must-read for horror paranormal mystery fans. If you like demons and secret organizations fighting the occult, then this is absolutely your series. This one pulls from folklore, ghost stories, and MI6 type intelligence organizations to craft a really intriguing, dark story with numerous layers. I give Shadow Service Vol. 1 - 3 a Lone Star rating of  ✯✯✯✯ stars. If you're into things like The X-Files and Supernatural, this just might be your cup of tea.
