After a painful break-up in university, Bethany Clarke has sworn off love to focus on her career. From her humble South Side beginnings to her position as an architect intern at a prestigious Chicago firm, she's proven to be a hard worker and is proud of her accomplishments. In three years, she’ll be a fully licensed architect which is more important to her than anything else.

Confirmed bachelor Nicholas Grey is more than the playboy perpetrated by the tabloids. Now his position as CEO of the architecture firm Grey & Company is on the line, and his mother’s interference is making things more difficult. Nick’s committed to his work, but, in order to be taken seriously, he needs to land a huge project. A stable personal life will help guarantee the contract.

Fairy Godmother Faye Delmore hears Nick’s plea and steps in to help. Posing as a publicist, she suggests a strategy to polish his public image, which includes convincing Beth to play his wife. Faye knows Nick needs the huge project to save his job, but she also knows he needs Beth in his life.

What happens when you add a fairy godmother who loves playing matchmaker into the equation? A future designed by destiny.

MY REVIEW:

Designed By Destiny is an adult romance (albeit not a very spicy one) that features a dual POV and a fake marriage/marriage of convenience. It also contains a fantasy element that I found very interesting. Nicholas and Bethany are both in the architecture business, working at the same company - he as the CEO and she as an intern. Their worlds collide when he needs to appear more responsible and less like a playboy during the company's trip to Las Vegas for a weekend. While there, Nick lands a major contract with Beth's help - but a big lie and some big adjustments throw them both for a few loops.

I enjoyed the book and loved that it had a couple of my favorite romance tropes (dual POV/fake relationship). It also introduced a side plot involving faeries. Thus far, there hasn't been a LOT on the fairy front - with the fairy godmothers and their background - but I'd definitely like to see how that develops. I was very intrigued about Faye, her complications with her betrothed, and the role she and her friends play with their company, FGI.

The romance itself was very straightforward. The pace moved along quickly. Sometimes it felt just a little too quick for me. I would've liked a bit more of a slow down to spend more time with both of the leads when they're apart. I thought it was very interesting to revisit some of the events that were just seen, but from an alternate starting point and perspective to continue the narrative. That's something I haven't read a lot of, so it made this particular romance feel a little more unique.

The leads have some chemistry, but there isn't really any steam. This is definitely a closed-door/no steam type of romance. Any big steam readers likely won't have this as their go-to choice. Fans of romance who want something a little different and want a twist on the fairy godmother element will want to give this a try though. It's very light on the heat, making it very approachable for new romance readers and anyone less comfy with higher steam levels in their books.

Overall, I had fun with Designed by Destiny, and I would recommend it - with the caveats mentioned above to help readers decide if it fits their preferences. I give Designed by Destiny a Lone Star rating of ✯✯✯ stars.
