Set at a luxe, aspirational boarding school inspired by the author's beloved alma mater Spelman College, this debut is a captivating celebration of the friends we choose, the family we protect, and the love we owe ourselves.

It's fourteen-year-old Avielle "Avi" LeBeau's turn to do what everyone in her family has done: leave home to attend Briarcliff Prep―a Historically Black Boarding School (HBBS). And as scared as she is to say goodbye to her parents and move to Georgia, she knows her fearless big sister Belle will be there to show her the ropes.

Before long, Avi settles into life at Briarcliff. New friends (and foes), challenging classes (at times too challenging), and maybe a cute tutor-turned-something-more (if her brothers don't get in the way). Meanwhile, Belle does what she always does: she runs the campus's social scene, especially now that she's dating Logan, the pride and joy of Briarcliff's sibling school Preston Academy.

But something about Logan doesn't sit well with Avi, no matter how many times Belle reassures her Logan is a good guy. And when Avi stumbles across the truth, her relationship with Belle is put to the test. If Avi reveals what she knows, their sisterhood might never recover. But if she doesn't, she might lose Belle forever.

Debut author Brianna Peppins deftly balances a celebration of sisterhood, self-discovery, and Black joy with an empathetic exploration of teen dating violence in this novel that is, at its heart, a love letter to Black girls.

MY REVIEW

Briarcliff Prep tells the story of the LeBeau sisters. Avielle and Belle both attend the titular boarding school, which is a Historically Black school that emphasizes the importance of Black historical figures and voices. Like with many boarding schools in books, there is also a neighboring school for boys. The book presents Avi's first year and Belle's senior year.

It needs to be noted that this book, a decent ways in, deals predominantly with a relationship abuse plot. Readers should be sure to check trigger warnings ahead of time, factoring that in. It discussed the struggles of seeking help for loved ones in horrific situations while dealing with standard high school drama. This is a story of sisterhood and womanhood and Black womanhood - and it's a great book.

I really like that the book goes all in culturally with these girls. I love that it has an Afro Latina side character. I love that it has all the usual boarding school drama, while also being sure to present struggles that young women and especially young Black women can face daily in school. This #OwnVoices story is one that needs to be shared with young readers who will take a lot of it and see themselves in it. School and human relationships (friend, families, romantic) can all put heavy emotional weight on students while navigating personal and societal expectations. This book tackles all of that, but never feels preachy about it.

I give Briarcliff Prep a Lone Star rating of ✯✯✯✯. I definitely recommend this book and would love to see Avielle's journey continue in the future if possible. Brianna Peppins has crafted a beautiful story detailing the hardships of sisterhood and family responsibility without ever losing a youthful vibe and outlook within it. Excellent book for teens and for fans of YA school stories that aren't afraid to dive into some heavy topics.
