MY REVIEW:
Academy of Magical Creatures is a volume that contains three connected novels. For this post, I will be reviewing the first book - and let me just say, I can't wait until I can fit in the next two! I've read quite a few magic + educational setting books over the years, but they've predominantly been in the YA genre. They are usually high schools, prep schools, private academies, and boarding schools. This one was really fresh for me since it is a NA (New Adult) book - meaning this one takes place on a college campus.
Starting there, I really love the setting. I thought the world building was really good in the first book (The Fire Prophecy). I want to see more of it and learn more about it. I also really liked the characters. There are familiar tropes for them, but I really enjoyed getting to know them all. Liam is definitely a standout. While not the primary protagonist, he shares the spotlight a good deal and - he stands apart from other characters since he has a disability of sorts. He deals with a chronic condition that is specific to this world - and I loved that for many reasons. I also love all the different Familiars. They're super fun.
The Fire Prophecy follows Sophia as she finds out her parents aren't her birth parents and she has magic abilities. Now she HAS to attend a magic academy and learn how to use her powers despite being years behind everyone else. As the title suggests, there is naturally a prophecy - and I'm curious to see how that plays out.
Overall, I really enjoyed the first book in the Academy of Magical Creatures series with in the Hidden Legends universe. I would gladly read more entries in the universe and I want to see the direction this story goes in. I give The Fire Prophecy a Lone Star rating of ✯✯✯✯. I definitely recommend it for fantasy fans who want a NA level and don't want to continually be reading YA to get their magic school fix.
