Sadie and her best friends are back in book two of this series about girls with animal powers. The Pack seems stronger than ever but Sadie has a secret that could claw its way out.

Sadie thought joining the Pack would be the wildest thing to happen to her this year but the school year is becoming even harder.

On top of classes Sadie has to navigate her growing feelings for her crush, taming her powers during cheer practice and trouble making hyenas trying to take her crown.

Then there is the massive secret she is keeping from her BFF Lindsey--that could destroy their friendship and The Pack as they know it. Will the shocking truth come out to bite them?

The Pack is a group of four friends who have animal spirits inside of them, allowing them wild abilities that would make them stand out amongst normal humans (Typicals). The first book was all about the main character, Sadie, being a new student at Charm House - a boarding school of sorts for these special girls. This sequel is all about Sadie trying to stay close to her friends when many challenges threaten to tear them apart. All the while, a dark looming threat remains present in the backdrop, begging to be addressed in more detail.

I liked The Pack as an initial series novel, but I felt like it could be so much more. This sequel starts to really lay in some deeper threads. It also tackles some of the issues I had with its predecessor. The first book had moments where things were a bit rushed or felt a bit clunky in terms of the overarching concept. It varied a lot in scale between a big fantasy concept with a bigger foe to come and a small scale set of middle school girl drama. Both are fun, but both did not feel well-balanced with each other.

Claw and Order is a big step up from the first book in the series. It addresses the influence of friend groups on an individual, the importance of teamwork, and the complexities that come with leadership, friendship, and personal responsibility. It still stays in the small scale feeling of the school, but it also starts pushing the walls outwards and leads into something that I am very excited to see. I hate that I'll have to wait so long to see what comes next, honestly.

Sadie definitely feels much more in-depth this time around. She was a bit standard in the initial book, but she's really starting to come into her own by facing challenges specific to her. One aspect that threw me off however, was the handling of one of her personal relationships with a boy at another school. That felt a bit rushed, especially given the very small time gap between the first and second book. I am much more used to the way relationships were handled in Harrison's The Clique series, which were more in-depth and followed closer than this one was. That would be okay if it wasn't the relationship for the MAIN character. That's something that I felt could have been finessed a bit more.

However, this book is definitely a step up from the last one. It takes a lot of threads from it and handles some while twisting others. This book was a fast read for me (a couple hours) and a fun one. I still wouldn't say that it's a must-read for everyone...but middle school girls and fans of The Clique or other young girl dramas with a twist will definitely find something to love here. I'm invested and I'm pretty sure tween/teen me would have been also. I give The Pack #2: Claw and Order a Lone Star rating of ✯✯✯✯ stars (I'll review book one soon, but that one was a ✯✯✯ for me - this is a definite improvement series wise). Claw and Order is a solid secondary installment that ups the ante without biting off too much. It brings just enough conflict into the friend group while still allowing it to ultimately grow...though the next threats it faces might just be too much and I want to see what happens.
