Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents the second book in Graci Kim's magical and mysterious Gifted Clans trilogy.

"Graci Kim does such an amazing job of blending Korean mythology into the modern world, I am now wondering how I ever lived without knowing all this cool information."--New York Times #1 best-selling author Rick Riordan

For Riley Oh, life as the Godrealm’s last fallen star is not all it’s cracked up to be. Her new divine heritage doesn’t even come with cool magical powers; half of her friends and family (including her parents) can’t remember her; and to top it all off, the entire Gom clan is mad at her for killing the Cave Bear Goddess and stripping away their healing abilities.

But when their anger boils over and a group of witches curse Riley’s home, she knows it’s up to her to restore magic back to her clan – even if it means sneaking into the Spiritrealm.

Luckily, Riley has some backup. Along with her sister, Hattie, Riley meets Dahl, a heaven-born boy with shockingly white hair and a fondness for toilets who might not be telling the whole truth about who he is. Together they’ll fight vicious monsters, discover dark underwater worlds, and race to save the land of the dead from a fate that no one could have foreseen.

And this time, Riley won’t let anything get in her way. Because she can’t shake the feeling that something terrible is coming their way – and the gifted community is going to need all the powers they can get.

MY REVIEW:

As the information above says, this is the second Gifted Clans novel following The Last Fallen Star (click to see review). It picks up soon after the events of the last book and continue Riley's journey of self-acceptance and identity formation. Even though she is technically a hero, she is suffering a lot of consequences that leave her feeling like a villain to her own community. Naturally, she eventually comes up with a wild idea to fix everything for everyone and ultimately ends up finding even more danger.

This book takes Riley to the Spiritrealm, which is a very interesting setting. I was already highly intrigued by the settings of the last book, but this one bumps things up significantly. A whole new world becomes accessible with its own rules, procedures, and challenges. Like the previous book, this one still deals with Riley trying to fit in with her family and community, while having to face her shortcomings and finding new ways of viewing herself. There are tons of new characters, new friends, and new foes, so there is a lot to enjoy with this installment in the trilogy.

Dahl is really interesting and rather unique, the various position holders in the Spiritrealm brings tons of intriguing new faces into the mix, and there are also several new mythological creatures. The creatures are one of my favorite aspects of these novels since I don't know a lot about Korean mythology. There is a lot that is new to me and it is super fun to not be rehashing the same old legends and mythologies that I'm already familiar with. The Gifted Clans novels have both been a breath of fresh air as of late and I am kinda sad that I have to wait an entire year before the final book in this trilogy is slated for release (The Last Fallen Realm). Thanks to this book, I'm already psyched for the finale and it's going to be a bummer to wait for it.

Everything that I liked about the last book was in this book (good pacing, fun adventure, big stakes, lovable characters, big world, fresh ideas) so I had a wonderful time reading it. I took two days to read through it and loved every minute of it. It tells a great tale about family, forging new connections, and facing fears when things are tough. These are all things that Riley is DEFINITELY going to need for her next adventure. I give The Last Fallen Moon a Lone Star rating of ✯✯✯✯ stars. I recommend it to Rick Riordan fans for sure, as well as anyone who enjoys a good adventure - but who might want some mythological elements they maybe haven't read about yet.
